Thorax 1 Practical

1. Bones and Joints
1.7 Identify the major joints of the thoracic walls including the following and name the type of joints and movements possible:
1.7.1 Thoracovertebral joints:
1.7.1.1 Costovertebral joints-synovial plane-slight gliding movement
1.7.1.2 Costotransverse joints- synovial plane- Slight gliding movement

1.7.2 Sternum related joints
1.7.2.1 Sternocostal joints- Cartilaginous (synchondrosis)
1.7.2.2 Sternoclavicular joints- Synovial Saddle
1.7.2.3 Manubriosternal joint- Symphisis
1.7.2.4 Costochondral-primary cartilaginous-no movement
Interchondral- plane synovial

2.Muscles
2.1 Identify the 3layers of intercostal muscles and their features+action (2.1.2):

External: 11 pairs, elevate ribs during forced inspiration
Internal: 11 pairs, depress ribs during forced expiration, maintain or increase tonus of intercostal space
Innermost- same as internal

2.1.1 How are the muscle fibers arranged?
The external and internal intercostal muscles are arranged perpendicularly.

2.1.3 What is their nerve supply?
Intercostal nerve
