Complications of Asthma

Complications
• Persistent cough
• Sleep disorder
– Asthma has been associated with snoring and sleep apnea
• Sleep apnea:a condition in which blockage of the upper airway causes the sleeper to temporarily stop breathing, then resume with a gasp, often many times during each hour of sleep.
– Asthma tends to get worse at night because airways close or narrow more so when you're lying down
• Decreased ability to exercise and take part in other activity
• Trouble breathing that requires breathing assistance(ventilator)
• Emergency room visits and hospital stays
• Status asthmaticus: a condition of severe, prolonged asthma.
• Death
• Missed school
• Missed work for/by parents > lost of work
• Decrease productivity
• Emotional problems since asthma is debilitating and frightening> significantly lower the quality of life
Asthma and pregnancy:
• Early labor
• Hemorrhage
• Hypertension
• Gestational diabetes
– a condition in which women without previously diagnosed diabetes exhibit high blood glucose levels during pregnancy
• Places the babies at risk for lower birth weight and breathing disorders
